BRITISH STANDARDS INSTITUTION CODE OF PRACTICE
BS 8644-1:2022

Arising from a recommendation in Dame Judith Hackitt’s Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, a new British Standard has been developed to improve how fire-safety information is managed across the life of a building.
Published on 31 July 2022 BS 8644-1:2022 Digital management of fire safety information – Part 1: Design, construction, handover, asset management and emergency response – Code of practice provides guidance on creating, managing, and sharing fire-safety information in a consistent and digital format.
The standard supports the Golden Thread of building-safety information introduced by the Building Safety Act 2022 and complements the Fire Safety Act 2021 and the Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, ensuring that accurate, accessible, and verifiable fire-safety information is maintained throughout the lifecycle of a building. By following BS 8644-1 Code of practice, duty-holders can demonstrate a structured approach to compliance under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and strengthen accountability, transparency, and information management within the modern fire-safety framework of the United Kingdom.
